Dry eye can cause burning, redness, fluctuating vision, irritation, and the persistent feeling that something is stuck in your eyes. While artificial tears may provide temporary comfort, they do not always address the inflammation or gland dysfunction responsible for chronic symptoms.
IPL therapy for dry eye offers a different approach. Instead of simply adding moisture to the eye’s surface, this advanced treatment targets common underlying factors that can make dry eye symptoms return.
A healthy tear film contains water, mucus, and protective oils. The meibomian glands along the eyelids produce the oil layer that slows tear evaporation. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, the tears may evaporate too quickly. This condition is known as meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD.
Over-the-counter eye drops can temporarily lubricate the eyes, but they cannot always restore normal oil flow or control inflammation around the eyelids. Patients may find themselves applying drops several times a day without experiencing lasting improvement.
Intense pulsed light, commonly called IPL, uses controlled pulses of light around the eyes while the eyes remain protected. The light energy targets abnormal blood vessels that may contribute to inflammation and interfere with healthy meibomian gland function.
By reducing inflammation and supporting the glands responsible for producing protective oils, IPL therapy can improve tear film stability and help prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.
IPL treatment may help:
• Reduce inflammation around the eyelids and ocular surface
• Improve the function of blocked meibomian glands
• Support a healthier oil layer within the tear film
• Decrease burning, redness, irritation, and fluctuating vision
• Provide longer-lasting relief than lubricating drops alone
Before treatment begins, protective eye shields and a gel are applied. We then deliver a series of controlled light pulses to the skin below and around the eyes. Patients may notice a gentle warming or snapping sensation, but the procedure is generally well tolerated.
A typical session takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Most patients need a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart, although the recommended schedule depends on the severity and cause of the dry eye condition. Maintenance treatments may also be recommended to help manage recurring symptoms.
IPL therapy is often considered for patients with evaporative dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction. Depending on the findings, it may be combined with prescription treatments, eyelid care, punctal plugs, or other personalized therapies.
